In Isòvol, there was a young maid, called Poneta, from the house of the lords of the place. Every day she went to get water with a pitcher in each hand and had to cross the river. Because the river had sudden floods, it turned out that every year some maid disappeared.
La Poneta did not want to suffer the same fate, and, as the church was far away, she could not comply with her Sunday precepts.
She begged the Lord and the priest without getting anything. An old hunter told her she could solve it by contacting the prince of darkness. This, the devil, promised to build her a bridge and a church before the rooster crowed in exchange for his soul. Having made the pact, the demon began to build the promised.
The clever Poneta took a lamp and went to the henhouse. The roosters, thinking it was daytime, started crowing while the devil was still building the bell tower. Embarrassed at having been mocked, he didn’t finish it.
